My name is Ides (as in “beware the…) Bergen. For the last 35 years, I have lived, eat, breathed, slept and dreamed heavy metal. My life’s mission is the eternal perpetuation of the best genres of music out there… heavy metal and hard rock. My new blog offers a fresh take on modern metal from the perspective of someone with an encyclopedic knowledge of the form. I am 43 years old as of this writing and Heavy Metal’s, self-proclaimed, O.G.(which I guess now stands for Official Grandfather). I am passing on my love and knowledge of all things heavy to my children and now, you (if you’ll let me).
I had my first taste of heavy music when my parents took me to see KISS at Market Square Arena in Indianapolis on August 10th, 1979. I was 8 years old at the time and the course of my life was forever diverted (for better or worse) that night. I have seen literally hundreds of concerts since, but nothing will ever rival that first blast of ear-splitting ecstasy! There is molten rock running through my veins with a heavy metal heart pumping it through. I’m an opinionated and passionate motherfucker when it comes to music. I know that’s true of the rest of you metal-heads too. Feel free to join in the discussion. My only rules are “don’t be disrespectful of others opinions and, for the love of fuck, DO NOT debate sub-genres!” As far as I’m concerned, as fans hard rock or metal, we should stand unified against all of the other manufactured pablum that passes for music these days. I may not be a fan of, say, Black Veil Brides or Pierce the Veil, but I’m not condemning anyone who is… at least they’re not listening to Kanye fucking West or Taylor “no one cares about your love-life” Swift. However, as a fan of MUCH heavier music, I will not be writing much about the aforementioned bands. You can expect to see a lot about black metal, death metal, thrash, doom, stoner-rock bands here. You might even learn something. Hell, maybe you’ll even teach this old dog some new tricks.
